Gulu Demolishes Illegal Market Structures

Traders in Pece Division, Gulu Municipality are counting losses after the demolition of their business structures by division authorities today.

The exercise, in which five buildings were razed, alongside other makeshift structures, affected traders in Cuk Pa Obec market in Ring Road cell - Tegwana Parish. 

The authorities say the market was operating without authorization from the council yet it promotes sell of illegal substances like marijuana and runs structures that are below minimum health standards.

Pece Division Chairperson Kelly Komakech says that some structures in the market had been converted into brothels while clients practiced open defecation, practices that turned the market into a public nuisance.

Similarly, Rose Alunyu, the area chairperson says the market had become a haven for burglars, Drug addicts and sex workers. 

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River region Police spokesperson says Police has been closely monitoring Tegwana Parish after recording several criminal activities in the area. Okema says at least two people have been killed in the area in recent months.

Jane Ocaya, a resident on whose land the market was established 15 years ago blames council for not warning her clients adding that she would seek legal redress for the damage and loss of income.

During the operation, ten vendors and bar owners were arrested and taken to Gulu Central Police Station in connection to selling alcohol mixed with marijuana and promoting day time sex at the market.
