Former world champion Dorcus Inzikuru has failed to qualify for the finals of the 3000m steeplechase in the 2012 London Olympics.

Inzikuru, who was the last athletes to qualify for the Olympics on the Ugandan team, finished 7th this afternoon in heat 3 of the 3000m steeplechase event won by Ethiopia’s Hinot Ayalew.

While the Ethiopian registered a good time of 9:24:01, Inzikuru recorded a miserable 9:75,29. The former World star, who has tried in the past three years to qualify for a world even, had qualified for Olympics at the 6th Edition of the International Athletics Bottrop Gala in Germany.

The former world and Commonwealth Steeplechase champion will who also won gold at the Helsinki 2007 World championships and 2008 Melbourne Commonwealth Games now joins the list of ‘tourists’ on the Ugandan team. The others who are out are Edwin Ekiring (badminton), Charles Ssekyeya (Weightlifting), Ganzi Mugula, Jamila Lunkuse (Swimming) and Jacob Araptany (Athletics)

While Inzikuru misses out on the final, Ethiopia will have three athletes in the 3000m steeplechase final, while Kenya have two. Another Ugandan medal hopeful Moses Kipsiro is expected to take to the field later this afternoon. Benjamin Kiplagat is the only Ugandan to progress for the final in the London Olympics.
