Sheikh Juma Katega, the Jinja district kadhi has died.

According to Ismael Kabuye, an Imam at Taquwa Mosque Katega aged 69 died on Sunday night at Islamic health centre in Jinja town.

"He had apparently suffered multiple organ failure, heart disease, among others since 2014. Since January this year, he has been in and out of hospital," he says.

Ibrahim Shamil Byakika, the Busoga region Muslims spokesperson says that the deceased has been sick since 2014 and in 2016, he was taken for heart surgery in India.

"He came back feeling much better but he had to return to India for review in 2017.

However, his condition deteriorated and he has been in that situation till he met his death," he added.

He said that last week, Katega's condition worsened and he was taken to Islamic clinic.

"After admission, he relapsed into coma. He never talked again as he lay motionless on his hospital bed surrounded by family and medics," he said.

Byakika said the late had worked hard to protect Muslim property within Jinja district, for instance, the cemetery next to Jinja regional referral hospital.

"The Muslim cemetery was being claimed by Jinja municipal Council. Sheikh Katega led a group of Muslim clerics in 2009 to stage a peaceful protest at the cemetery for two days," he said.

Byakika also added that the deceased had also protested against a sect of tabliq Muslims bent on grabbing a two-acre piece of land located along Mvule crescent in Jinja town.

He said the location has the popular Amin's mosque where Busoga Muslims plan to construct the largest mosque in the region.
