The Uganda Red Cross has given emergency care to 11 people who were injured in clashes between armed men and supporters of the incumbent Budadiri West MP, Nandala Mafabi.
The incident occurred in Masamire village shortly after polls opened in the midmorning.
Mushedu Wagima, one of the injured, says the fighting occurred with Nandala's convoy of three vehicles was stopped by armed men. He says when the Member of Parliament and his team went to inquire what was wrong, they were beaten up.
Julius Odeke, a journalist with the Razor Newspaper who was traveling with Nandala, was shot at during the brawl.
Speaking shortly before he was taken to the operating theatre in Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Odeke said he jumped out of the car to take pictures of the brawl. The armed men demanded that he hand over his camera and when he refused to do so, he was shot at in the chest.
Odeke is in critical condition.
Alex Watua, the senior Red Cross officer at the scene, says the injured received emergency treatment at Buwalasi, about 20 minutes from Mbale town. He says they were stabilized at Pato Health Center before being rushed to Mbale Hospital.
Both the Sironko and Mbale police say they will issue a statement on the matter later today.
