Uganda's Junior athlete Peruth Chemutai has qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games and the World Junior Championship to take place in Bydyoszcz, Poland.

Chemutai hit the Olympic Games qualifying mark of 9:45 by finishing 10th and running a time of 9:31:34 in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2016 IAAF Diamond League in Shanghai, China on Saturday.

The race was won by Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng with a time of 9:07:42, while Bahrain's Ruth Jebet came second. "I am very excited because Chemutai is a junior athlete and this brings the number of the women who have qualified for Olympics to three," Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President, Dominic Otuchet told URN on phone.

Another Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei finished second in the 5000m race and also qualified for the Olympics for his second race at the Olympics. The athlete has already qualified for the Games last year in the 10,000m but will now have the chance to tussle it out in two races in Brazil.

"We are very happy that Cheptegei has won the country a silver medal," said Otuchet who added that their target remains 18 athletes to qualify for the Olympics.

Cheptegei set a time of 13:00:60, while Kenya's Edris Muktar came first with a time of 12:59:96. Twelve athletes have now qualified for the Olympics Games and two boxers.
