Kabale Municipal Markets in Sorry State

In short
Kabale Central Division chairperson, Sentaro Byamugisha says the division has set aside Shillings 60 million to carry out remedial works in the markets. He says they will spend Shillings 20 million to repair the roofs and open drainage channels in old Kabale Central and New Kabale central markets.

Three major markets in Kabale municipality are in a sorry state. They include Garage street market also known as Owino, New Kabale Central and Old Kabale central Market. The roofs of the Old Kabale and New central markets leak. The drainage channels are blocked, which leads to flooding whenever it rains.

The lights have become nonfunctional forcing traders to leave the market once darkness sets in. The situation isn't any different at Garage street market. The market lacks modern stalls, lighting and a proper drainage system. The market becomes soggy whenever it rains due to lack of a cemented floor.

Kabale municipal authorities have been promising to renovate the market since 2011 in vain. According to the vendors, the poor state of the market has pushed their customers to Mwanjari and Bugongi markets, which are found outside the central business district. George Ayebare, a trader at Kabale New Central Market, says the condition of the market worsens each passing day.

Ayebare says the leadership of their association has been engaging the municipal authorities to address their concerns in vain. Flavia Kiconco, a trader at Kabale Garage Street market, wants the authorities to work on the drainage to stop flooding since they are unable to work on the market.
