A priest from the Church of Uganda has been arrested in Kabale on charges of defilement. Reverend George Mande is the second Anglican priest in Kabale to have been arrested for engaging in unlawful sexual activity this month. In early April Rev. Canon Esau Habwomugisha, the Kabale Diocesan Secretary for Education was arrested for adultery. The Kabale District Police Commander Kadri Asiimwe says Rev. Mande was arrested on Wednesday night in an impromptu swoop of Happy Land Lodge in Kabale town. Asiimwe says the girl, who is a student of Drusilla Balaba Vocational School, did not return home after the school term ended, but moved into a room in the lodge that was rented by the priest. The 37-year-old Rev. Mande is a married man. He is the parish priest of Ruhija Church in Rubanda West. The Kabale CID officer, Fred Eriku, says the police have ordered for the birth certificate of the girl to ascertain her age. They have also instructed her parents to record a statement on the matter. The Bishop of Kigezi Diocese, George Katwesigye, has expressed dismay at the incident. He says priests are supposed to lead by example and that engaging in adultery and sexual immorality will lead to the downfall of the diocese.
