Kigezi Elders Recieve Honorary Degrees From Kabale University

Kabale University has on Saturday awarded honorary degrees to four leaders from Kigezi region in recognition of their great contribution towards development in the region.

This is the first time the university awards honorary degrees after it was turned into a public university last year.

Those honored are 92-year old Festo Karwemera, famous author from Kabale district, James Musinguzi Garuga a prominent businessman from Kanungu District and Peter Mugyenyi Ndimbiirwe the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC).

Ndimbiirwe hails from Rukungiri District. Also awarded is veteran political,  Philemon Mateke from Kisoro district. He is the Minister of State for Regional Affairs.

Festo Karwemera was awarded with a Honorary Literature in Education degree, While James Garuga Musinguzi was awarded a honorary business degree,

Honorable Philmon Mateke was awarded an honorary philosophy degree while Dr. Peter Mugyenyi Ndimbiirwe was awarded a honorary Science Medicine degree.

The University Chancellor Professor George Mondo Kagonyera said Festo Karwemera was approved by the University senate for the award an honorary Literature Education degree for his contribution in promoting Rukiga language.

Kagonyera says Karwemera has authored very many books in a local Rukiga language with a mission that the Kikiga culture does not die with the old generation.

Kagonyera says that Garuga was endorsed to be awarded  a honorary business degree for promoting agriculture industry in the country especially tea growing. James Garuga Musinguzi started Kigezi Highland Tea Company Limited.

Philmon  Mateke was awarded an honorary philosophy degree for promoting education sector in the country. Mateke was also District Chairperson after serving for many years as a Member of Parliament.

Dr. Peter MugyenyiDimbiirwe, a renowned Ugandan HIV/AID recherche   was awarded an honorary Science Medicine degree for promoting health sector especially his efforts in fighting against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Prime Minister of Uganda Dr.Ruhakana Rugunda was the guest of honor at the function held at the University grounds.Rugunda challenged students to embrace courses that are job- making.
Rugunda asked the University to introduce  a faculty of Agriculture as a precondition for er to Kabale District Local Government to give it more land for expansion.

James Musinguzi Garuga  haied  the government for taking over Kabale University which was already crumbling.

Musinguzi said it remains the responsibility of all stakeholders to make sure to contribute towards its progress.
