Kanungu district's only referral hospital is closing down due to the deteriorating conditions at the hospital. The district Director of Health Services, Doctor Steven Sebunde, says the conditions at Kambuga hospital are appalling and it is increasingly becoming risky to continue providing health services under such conditions. Doctor Sebunde explains that the building structures have become weak and the ceilings are falling in and posing a threat to the patients. He also says that most of the medical equipment is old and efforts to replace them with new ones have been hampered by financial constraints. The hospital which serves over 200,000 people was constructed in 1965. Sebunde says Kambuga hospital will effective next week provide outpatient services only. patients with major illnesses will be referred to Nyakibale and Kisiizi hospitals in Rukungiri. Sebudde admits that it may be inconvenient for patients and health workers, but added the move is necessary to pave way for the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the hospital.
