More than 100 residents of Mahyoro Sub County in Kamwenge district have staged a peaceful demonstration to protest the poor state of roads in their area. They are particularly concerned about the appalling state of Mahyoro - Ibanda road, which they claim has been neglected by the district leadership for a very long time. The residents argue that the poor state of the road hampers development and has affected their livelihood. On Wednesday,  led by Jackson Mwesigye Ndarifunte, the residents decided to block the road using banana suckers and tree branches blocking traffic for several hours.

The protestors chanted songs against the leadership of Robert Kamasake, the Kamwenge LC V chairperson. “Is Mahyoro part of Uganda or in Congo” read a placard carried by one of the protestors. After staging the protest, the residents mobilized themselves and raised funds to buy murrum to seal all the potholes on the impassable roads.  Mwesigye told URN that they decided to work on road because the district leadership has failed to respond to their pleas to rehabilitate the road. John Bosco Mugisha, a driver who plies the Kamwenge-Mahyoro Ibanda road says that he lost his tipper lorry recently after it swerved off the road and overturned as he tried to dodge potholes.

He appeals to the district leadership to fix the road immediately to avoid any further disasters. Hussein Muganwa, an LC I chairperson in the area says has backed the protests by residents. He accuses the district and central government of absconding from their role of better services to the people of Mahyoro Sub County and Kitagwenda County in general. Juma Kabona, the LC III chairperson of Mahyoro Sub County has appealed for calm amongst the residents saying that the district is working round the clock to fix the roads. Robert Kamasaka, the Kamwenge LC 5 chairperson has not yet commented on the allegations as his known mobile phone number was switch off.
