Peter Besisira, a resident of Kicwamba village in Kanungu district is to spend the next 32 years in jail for aggravated defiled. He was convicted on Tuesday by Justice Michael Elubu in Rukungiri, who found him guilty of defiling a 3-year-old girl.

 
Prosecution led by Godfrey Oundo, the Rukungiri Resident State Attorney, told court that on 25th October 2012 while in Kicwamba village, Besasira sought shelter at the residence of Nancy Ampaire's since it was raining, on realizing the head of the home was away, he decided to defile the 3-year-old.

 
Oundo asked court to give the accused a deterrent sentence so that it serves as a lesson to would be offenders. As part of the mitigation measures, the 42-year-old Besisira asked court to give him a lenient sentence, saying he was the sole bread winner of his family of six members.

 
In his ruling, Justice Elubu said Besisira should have protected the young vulnerable girl child as a parent instead of defiling her. "You are a disgrace to society and at your age you should have protected the young girl"   said Justice Elubu. He handed him a 32-year jail term, saying government has a duty to protect young girls from defilers like Besisira, adding that the convict should be kept away from society for a long time.

 
Nancy Ampaire, the mother of the defilement victim broke down in tear as Justice Elubu read the ruling. She said the convict deserves the punishment since he failed to consider the life of the toddler before he engaged in the shameful act. The convict's relatives were not in court by the time of the ruling neither was he represented by a lawyer.
