The Works department of Kanungu district in Kigezi region has come under fire from the local residents over the failure to re-construct a bridge that collapsed in 2010.

Rukara Bridge which is located in Kihembe Parish in Kanyatorogo Sub county connects the sub county to Kihihi town council which is Kanungu's busiest business town.

The bridge is on located on the road that is maintained by Kanungu local government. It collapsed in 2010 after a heavy down pour.

Residents say that their leadership has promised for years to repair the bridge and not done so.

Alex Turyamwujuka, a resident, says that the issue of the bridge has become like a joke.

David Kihembe, a businessman, in the area says farmers in that the sub county have to sell their Matooke, Cassava,Jackfruit for lower prices because they are unable to transport them to other markets.

Many farmers cannot afford the cost to transport their produce to the weekly Kihihi Market held every Saturday.

Kihembe is disappointed that though the area L C IV councilor Christopher Kamara is also the Kanungu district secretary for works, the bridge remains unrepaired. Kihembe says repairing the bridge was one of the LC V's chairperson Josephine Kasya's campaign promises in 2011.

Kihembe says fed up residents have now erected a temporary wooden bridge that can handle pedestrians, light cars, bicycles and motorbikes. The temporary bridge was completed on May 15.

Kanungu district works secretary Christopher Kamara, however, says money for construction of a permanent bridge has been earmarked in the 2015/2016 budget.
