There is looming hunger in Karamoja region, according to local authorities. The leaders note that while the region received heavy rainfall that started as early as February this year, farmers have harvested little across the region.

Karamoja region that is characterised by nomadic pastoralism receives one block of rains that peaks around May. Farmers utilize the rains to plant sorghum and of late, maize and other crops.

However, the heavy rains have reportedly left the region without much food. Both MPs and local leaders, say the situation might be worse this year following the destruction of crop gardens by heavy rains.

Esther Anyakun, the Nakapiripirit Woman MP, whose district is located along the green belt of Karamoja and food basket in the region, says they have lost hope for a good harvest.

Speaking during the Karamoja Cultural Day celebrations over the weekend, Anyakun appealed to the Minister for Presidency, Esther Mbayo to relay the message to government.

Mark Loli, the Moroto District Agricultural Officer, says little has been achieved in the rains that the district received. He blames it on late planting and pests like fall army worm that ravaged maize gardens in the district.

Most people are now taking advantage of the good harvest in other regions especially Teso, Sebei and Bugisu to stock food.
