Karamoja Minister Summons Leaders to Discuss Hunger Situation

 Janet Kataha Museveni, the first lady and Minister of Karamoja has summoned all leaders in Karamoja region for a meeting to devise ways of managing the current hunger situation there.

 
The meeting is scheduled to take place at Morolinga state lodge in Napak district early this week. Those invited including all Resident District Commissioners, Chief Administrative Officers, LC V and LC III chairpersons of all sub counties in the seven districts in Karamoja.
 

Karamoja sub region is facing severe hunger resulting from crop failure due to prolonged drought. At least 17 people have died due to hunger while scores of others are starving.

Government and humanitarian organisations operating in Karamoja say one in every two people there faces "emergency level of food security". Some districts in the region are diverting funds from several programmes and projects to buy food for the starving people.




Recently, the Finance Ministry released 2.5 billion Shillings out of the 24 billion Shillings requested for by the Office of the Prime Minister to enable government send emergency rations to the affected when images of emaciated Karimojong children and elders flooded the media.
