Major roads leading to Karamoja have become impassable as a result of heavy rains that have devastated the region.

The damage is visible on Moroto- Kotido road, Moroto- Soroti road, Namalu-Muyembe road that connects to Mbale and some parts of Abim- Amuria, connecting to Soroti, where passengers have spent nights after their vehicles got stuck. There are also reports of vehicles that were swept away by running water.

Road users now have to incur additional costs to be able to cross from Karamoja to neighbouring districts. At Lopei River, travellers pay between 5000 to 300,000 Shillings to be helped to cross over. The locals especially youths gather around the flooded spot to wait for vehicles and pedestrians in dire need to help.

"We charge according to the weight and type of machine to lift. When it is a motorbike, we charge 10,000 to 30,000 Shillings. For vehicles, that depends on the size and the driver. These passenger vehicles that pass here daily are charged less but those ones which appear once in a while, we also charge more money" John Ilukol, one of the locals says.

Mark Dedeng, another local says he gets between 20,000 and 100,000 Shilling per day from pushing vehicles.
