Police in Kasese are holding a 63 year old man for allegedly knocking dead a traffic officer and seriously injuring another.

Police sources in Kasese say Cyril Kamara, a clinical officer in Bwera, while driving a Toyota Premio Number UAP 389B, allegedly hit two traffic officers who were standing on the road side at Rusese village in Mpondwe town.

The incident that occurred at around 2:30pm on Wednesday left Constable Moses Kakuma dead while the Officer in Charge traffic Bwera police station, Turyatemba Willy is still in critical condition.

Kasese district police commander Isaac Amanya says they suspect that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and that when he saw traffic police on the high way he lost control of the vehicle and eventually rammed into them.

Amanya revealed that by the time of the accident the traffic officers were standing by the road side next to the police motorcycle No UP 2237 which was also seriously damaged.

He quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the vehicle was over speeding by the time of the accident.

The district CID boss Twongyeirwe Justus said that investigations are ongoing and the suspect is to be taken to court once investigations are complete.
