Kennedy Katende will open Uganda's campaign at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil with a preliminary light heavy weight (81kg) fight against England's Joshua Buatsi on Sunday.


The Games started on Wednesday with the women's football competition before the men also took to the field on Thursday.  


In the draws made on Thursday afternoon in Barra, Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil by the International Boxing body, AIBA and the International Olympic Committee (UOC), Uganda's second boxer Ronald Serugo in the fly weight (52kg) category will fight on August 13 against Narek Abgaryan (Armenia)


Before the draws were made on Thursday, AIBA also released a statement regarding the eligibility of Russian boxers at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games


"In accordance with the decision of the IOC Executive Bureau (EB) of July 24th AIBA has carried out an individual analysis of the anti-doping record of each of the 11 Russian boxers qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and submitted its recommendation on their eligibility to the IOC," they added.


AIBA said the process is now complete and confirmation has been received from the IOC Review Panel that the following 11 Russian boxers are eligible to compete at Games.


In the football games played on Thursday night jet lagged Nigeria's men's team managed to settle in few hours after arrival from the US before they beat Japan 5-4. Africa's other representatives South Africa also held hosts Brazil to a barren draw, while Honduras beat Algeria 3-2.
