As Uganda struggles to improve its football rating on the international scene, Kampala City Council seeks to gazette Nakivubo war memorial stadium for street vendors to sell their merchandise.
The deputy mayor Florence Namayanja says that KCC has already applied to the stadium management seeking permission to use the facility. She says once their application is approved they will meet their technical team to discuss how best to utilize the venue.
She says that the use of Nakivubo will only commence once KCC has assessed the state of the available sanitation facilities. Namayanja says that KCC will select days when the vendors can use the stadium to sell their products.
KCC has repeatedly engaged in running battles with the vendors over the illegal sale of their merchandise on city streets. An official from the Nakivubo stadium management who declined to be named confirmed that they have received several applications including one from hawkers.
He says KCC seeks to use the stadium perimeter but not the pitch. He says the stadium management is yet to seat and resolve on whether or not to accept the application.
