Kampala city mortuary is to get a facelift, Kampala Capital City Authority Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago said on Wednesday.

Without disclosing the costs of renovation, Lukwago said that the money to renovate the city mortuary has been factored into this year’s Athority budget.

The city mortuary sports a pathetic look with no protective gears for the workers, broken doors and leaking roofs.

Lukwago described it as unacceptable for the only mortuary in the city to be left in shambles. He said that the sight of bodies dumped on the floors, in a morgue that has no functional cold chain is shameful.

Workers at the city mortuary who declined to be named told URN that with no protective gears and lack of coolers, keeping the bodies in the city mortuary is an uphill task. The facility accommodates between 15 and 20 bodies.

Medical students and police surgeons reportedly use the city mortuary for forensic tests as well as to accommodate victims of accidents, because this is only facility in town.

Kampala city council authority director of health services, Dr Makanga, says that the facility will be fitted with the modern equipment.
