A police officer in Kibaale district decided to commit suicide, just a day to the New Year (2013).

45 year old Steven Sesalu, a Special Police Constable (SPC) attached to Kibaale police station, hang himself on Sunday evening at Kibaale police barracks.

Rosemary Nakitende, a fellow police officer, found Sesalu hanging in his room at about 6pm when she went to check on him.

John Ejukuna Elatu, the Kibaale district police commander, says Sesalu used a shirt to hang himself.

Elatu says the incident has taken the police force in Kibaale by surprise, describing the deceased as a humble and committed officer. He says the motive behind the crime is still being investigated.

The District Police Commander says however preliminary reports suggest that on the fateful evening the deceased was drunk and on returning home, he locked himself inside the room.
He was later found dead.

At the time of filing the story, arrangements were being made to hand the body to relatives for burial.

The incident comes less than a month after another police officer in Rakai shot himself dead.

Joseph Ssekiwunga, a criminal investigations officer at Kirumba police post, reportedly turned the gun on himself two weeks ago at  Kirumba police staff quarters.

In January 2011, an officer attached to Kajjansi police station shot himself dead in his house. Patrick Enangu reportedly locked himself in his house and killed himself after returning from a night patrol duty.
