Kinyara Sugar Factory has increased sugarcane price from Shillings 66, 700 a ton to Shillings 72,000. Masilaman Mathivanan, the Agricultural Manager Kinyara Sugar Limited says the increment was agreed on after a week long negotiations with Masindi Sugarcane Growers Association Limited.

He however, declined to explain what prompted the price increment.  Last week, Kinyara Sugar out growers demanded for an increase in the Sugarcane price in light of the 6percent withholding tax levied on them.

Robert Atugonza, the Chairman Masindi Sugarcane Growers Association Limited says the increment puts Kinyara Sugar Factory for the first time on the same lining with other sugar factories in the country.

Atugonza explains that Kinyara has been offering less cane price compared to Kakira and Lugazi sugar factories. He reveals that the interim price of sugarcane for Kakira is Shillings73, 000 while that of Lugazi is Shillings72, 000 per ton.

Atugonza hailed the management of Kinyara for announcing the new price and being considerate to the farmers on the issue of lower sugarcane price. He however stressed need for farmers to convince government not to tax sugarcane.

Patrick Byamukama, one of the sugarcane farmers who supply the crop to Kinyara says with the price increment, farmers will earn an extra of over Shillings5, 000 on each ton of sugarcane they supply in the new financial year.

Benedict Ssensaga, another farmer welcomes the price increment but urges the factory on prompt picking of the cut sugarcane from the plantations. Ssesanga says delayed picking of the cut sugarcane in gardens makes them lose weight, which affects their tonnage.
