Phillip Kipieko will lead Uganda's team to the  2016 Africa Senior Athletics Championship in Durban, South Africa.

Kipieko who has already qualified for the Olympic Games in Brazil will compete in the 5000m race. "He is among the eight athletes who have been selected and we are confident the event will help him prepare well for the Olympics," said Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President, Dominic Otuchet on Tuesday.

The Federation named an eight man team that will represent Uganda at the event to run June 23-26.  The Championship will bring together top African star athletes.

Uganda will hope that the other seven athletes on the team can also hit Olympic qualifying targets in their respective races. "We would have liked to send more athletes, but we are struggling on finances and have several events to plan for," added Otuchet.

Besides Kipieko, the other top runners on the team include; Abdallah Mande and Janat Achola.

At the last Africa Senior Championship held in Marrakech, Morocco in 2014, Uganda won no medal. They won one gold and two bronze medals at the event in Benin in 2012.
