The 2012 Olympic marathon gold medal winner  Stephen Kiprotich is targeting a place in Uganda's team for the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championship.

President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), Dominic Otuchet confirmed to URN on Wednesday that Kiprotich will enter camp with the other athletes to start preparing before the trails.


"He indicated that he wants to be part of the team since the event will be hosted by Uganda," added Otuchet. Kiprotich who finished a distant 16th at the 2016 Rio Olympics has never run in a Cross Country event.


Each of the countries is expected to field six runners per event. The Championship which will be hosted by Uganda for the first time will feature the men and women's senior's event and the junior boys and girls events.


Joshua Cheptegai who together with Philip Kipyeko and women runners Stella Chesang and Juliet Chekwel are all expected to make Uganda's team for the event slated for March 26th at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.


Last year Uganda beat Bahrain for the honour of hosting the biennial event. Over 700 athletes and hundreds of journalists are expected to attend.
