Kipyeko Targets Good Show In Olympic Games

Fresh from winning a silver medal at the 2016 Africa Cross Country Championship on March 12th, Phillip Kipyeko has set eyes on reaching the final at the Olympic Games in Brazil this year.

Speaking to URN at the National Council of Sports headquarters, Lugogo on Monday before presenting his medal, Kipyeko said he has set his target on doing well in Marathon at the Olympics. "I am happy to win a silver in Yaounde, Cameroon," he added.

He finished second in the men's 10km race which was won by Kenya's James Rungaru who beat him by one second after recording a time of 26:34. Uganda's team also won silver after Kenya won the gold medal.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation told URN that they are happy that despite sending a small team to Cameroon, they managed to win two silver medals. "We are on the right track as we work hard before we host the 2017 World Cross Country Championship," he added.

In Junior event Uganda's Mande Buchendich finished 11th, while Janat Chemusto came 14th in the junior women's 6km race. Stella Chesang was 10th in the senior women's 8km race, while Monday Abdallah, Daniel Rotich and Thomas Ayeiko finished 8th, 9th and 11th respectively in the senior men's 10km race.

The Championship organised under the Confederation of African Athletics will also attract athletes from South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Angola, Tanzania, Eritrea, Ethiopia and giants Kenya among others.
