Police in Kiryandongo district is holding a security guard for allegedly shooting dead a civilian.

Lydia Tumushabe, the Albertine region police publicist, identifies the suspect as James Muheka (34) from Kalangala village in Kiryandongo Sub County attached to New Uganda Securiko Limited.

She says Muheka, who is a night guard as Madifa Cooperative Sacco located at Kiryandongo trading centre, on Thursday morning shot dead one Geoffrey Owinyi, a resident of the same area.

The incident occurred at around 5:30am.

Tumushabe says Owinyi (31) was shot several times in the stomach and died instantly.

She says preliminary investigations show Muheka opened fire on the deceased who was walking past the Sacco very early in the morning.

Tumushabe says police has already arrested the guard and is now detained at Kiryandongo district police station.

She reports that on interrogation Muheki claimed that the deceased attacked him and tried to disarm him. He shot him in self-defence.

But Tumushabe says this is unlikely as initial ballistics evidence indicates the deceased was shot at a distance.

She condemns the misuse of fire arms by the security guards in the region adding that the suspect will be charged with murder.

This is the second case in the area in less than a month of a security guard shooting dead an unarmed civilian.

Mid last month, a security guard from the same group shot dead a reveller at Hoima River’s bar.

Two months ago, police on a patrol injured a civilian in Kiryatete suburbs of Hoima town while in September 2010, police shot two casual labourers at a British American Tobacco (BAT) tobacco buying centre in Kibati who were protesting over lack of pay.
