The traders rioted following the arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye, the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party, presidential candidate.Besigye was picked up by Police when he defied Police directives not to lead a procession through Jinja road on his way to Nkuruma road to greet his supporters as party of his campaigns.
Besigye was picked up by Police when he rejected a directives not to lead a procession through Jinja Road on his way to Nkrumah Road as part of his campaigns. He was driven to Kira Road Police Station, before he was taken to his home in Kasangati.
The arrest drew protests from his supporters at Kisekka Market. They barricaded Kyaggwe Road and lit bonfires using used car tyres. As a result, Anti-riot Police used teargas and water cannons to disperse the rioters.
The traders dispersed into the neighbouring Mukwano and Kisekka Auto malls before they re-grouped and started pelting stones at Police personnel. A police officer sustained injuries on the head after he was hit by a stone.
Two rioters were arrested by Police and bundled on a waiting Police Pickup. A team of heavily armed Military Police also rushed to deploy around the area to restore calm.
Our reporter also saw a team of Uganda Red cross Volunteers in the area ready to respond to emergencies.
By the time of filing this story, Police had released Besigye to resume his campaigns. Besigye left his home, escorted by hundreds of his supporters. It is not yet clear, whether Besigye will be allowed to enter the city centre according to his earlier plan.
