Kiyunga Women Protest Misuse of Hospital Ambulance

Police has blocked a demonstration by women in Kiyunga trading center in Luuka district to protest the misuse of an ambulance donated to Kiyunga health Center IV, by James Bagoole, the area MP Elect.
This morning, about sixty women from Kiyunga trading center walked through Nabitaama, Bukendi and Naigobya villages to express dissatisfaction with the way the ambulance is being used.
The women were however intercepted by police before they could reach Kiyunga health center. The women led by Grace Waiswa, the LC III chairperson elect for Kiyunga Sub County claim that the ambulance is not serving the purpose for which it was donated to the health center.
They claim that the ambulance is used by Margaret Segonga, Luuka district health officer for her private work instead of ferrying patients to in need of emergency treatment to hospital.
Waiswa says that they want the district health office to immediately reassign the ambulance to the work for which it was donated to the health center. Margaret Segonga admits using the car for her transport but says she also uses it to transport patients.
Ssegonga also says that she uses her own funds to maintain the ambulance because the health center has not budget for servicing the car. Frank Bikaba, a clinician at Kiyunga Health center says that most patients in need of emergency treatment are referred to Iganga Hospital which is 27 kilometers away.
He says that the health center can not afford fuel to operate the ambulance to drop the patients in Iganga. Allan Toguzire, Luuka District Police Commander says that they stopped the demonstration and advised the women to raise their concerns with the local authorities.
