The election of a new Kyabazinga for Busoga has been suspended again.
Fresh elections were due to be held on January 12th, but the chairman of the Royal Chiefs' Council yesterday announced that they were indefinitely postponed.
On December 16th Daudi Kawunhe Wakooli, chairman of the Council, announced that the polls would take place in a month's time. However now he says he never set the January 12th date for the Kyabazinga elections and they will not take place as planned. He said statements purportedly released from his office on the matter were forgeries.
Juma Luba Munulo, the Royal Chief of Bunya, told a press conference in Jinja yesterday that during a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni on Monday, it was agreed that peaceful elections were the way forward. But he said no date has been agreed on for when that would take place.
The meeting attended by all the Royal Chief apart from Edward Columbus Wambuzi, son to the late Kyabazinga and Nabwana Tabingwa, Royal Chief of Luuka.
Columbus Wambuzi claims a right to his father's throne. Last year he was voted into office by a minority group in the Royal Council, but the chiefs responded by obtaining a court injunction against his leadership.
In October this year, nine of the 11 royal chiefs voted William Gabula as new Kyabazinga. The election was overturned Wambuzi obtained his own injunction against the polls.
