Kyambogo University officials have come under fire from the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament for failing to collect tuition amounting to 4.8 billion shillings.
The officials appeared before the committee chaired Ntungamo Municipality MP, Gerald Karuhanga led by the University Secretary, Patrick Madaya on Wednesday afternoon to respond to queries raised in the auditor general's report for financial year 2014/15.
Other officials included Everest Ainomugisha, the Kyambogo University Bursar and Samuel Akolimo, the out-going university secretary and others.
The MPs noted that the university flouted its policy requiring students to clear tuition before sitting exams. Karuhanga tasked Madaya to explain why the university had deviated from its policy.
In his response, Madaya said they are sometimes forced to bend the rules because of pressure from parents and State House, which pays for some of the students.
//Cue in: "We have...
Cue out:...to do."//
However, Mathias Mpuuga, the Committee lead Counsel, told the officials that the committee wouldn't be driven by sentiment. The Masaka municipality MP demanded for proof when and how the policy was waived.
//Cue in: "if indeed...
Cue out:...sentiments."//
In his response, Madaya said the policy was lifted by the university council resolution. Mpuuga asked the officials to present the council minutes waiving the policy.
//Cue in: "you get it...
Cue out:...need it."//
