The injured were rushed to Bugiri main hospital in critical condition.
 
The deceased has been identified as Harriet Akaka aged 17. They were struck during a heavy down pour at around 9:30am on Monday.
 
According to one of the injured persons, Habenga Vitalis, a primary teacher at Hindocha primary school in Bugiri town council, said he first saw something like a ball and moments later heard a loud bang.
 
The other six members of his family who were in the kitchen were discovered by neighbors also lying unconscious.
 
The other victims were identified as Jennifer Abbo, a teacher at St. Luke primary school in Muterere sub county, John Onyango, Denis Obala, Sande Mutumba, Fred Wanyama, Godfrey Kalibala and Henry Isiko among others.
 
According to the Nsibirano village Local Council One chairperson Peter Ochieng, the
incident happened as the family members were preparing to have a meal.
 
Ochieng said this is the second time in less than two years that a similar incident is taking place.
 
He said the lightning would have been attracted to hit the family due to the solar panels that are installed on their house to provide electricity.
 
The officer in charge CID at Bugiri central police station, David Otim, said the injured sustained burns on their heads, hands and legs.
 
Otim urged members of the public to always install lightning conductors on top of their houses as a way of avoiding similar incidents.
 
The body of the deceased was transported to Tira village, Busitema sub county in Busia district for burial.
