Luweero By-election: Five Aspirants Step Down in Favor of Nalwanga

Five NRM supporters who were eyeing the Luweero district MP seat have withdrawn their interest in favor of Rebecca Nalwanga, the official party candidate.They are Lillian Nakate, Elizabeth Nabatanzi Lugudde, Ritah Mugalu, Patricia Magala and Jimiya Ssenkanja.

The five decided to withdraw following a series of meetings with President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM chairperson. Lillian Nakate says she decided to step down in favor of Nalwanga after Museveni warned them that disunity was a recipe for a loss in the bye-election.

Elizabeth Lugudde, another aspirant says it was unfair to push for party primaries because the NRM guidelines were clear that a candidate holds a party ticket for years. Ritah Mugalu, another former aspirant says they are rallying behind Nalwanga to ensure party cohesion ahead of the by elections.

However, none of the aspirants was will willing to reveal the terms and conditions under, under which they pulled withdrew their interest. Richard Tadwong, the minister of general duties says the withdrawal of the aspirants is a strategic move. He calls on the supporters of the aspirants to rally behind Nalwanga to win the seat.

Immediately after the aspirants struck the agreement with president Museveni, Abdul Nadduli, the Luweero NRM chairperson handed over the party flag to Nalwanga as sign of an end to the stalemate.

Nalwanga has welcomed the decision of her rivals to step down in her favor saying she is ready to tussle it out with Brenda Nabukenya, the joint opposition candidate. Nominations for the Luweero district woman by-elections are scheduled for Monday 5th and 6th May 2014.

The elections are scheduled for 22 May 2014. The Luweero district woman MP seat fell vacant after the court of appeal nullified the election of Brenda Nabukenya saying the polls didn't comply with the electoral law.
