The Officer in charge of Kasagama police station in Lyantonde district is in trouble for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a complainant.

It is alleged that the police officer indentified as Kayondo, the officer in charge of Kasagama police station asked a bribe of 170,000 shillings from a resident indentified as Labuan Kaserekirwe to open up a case of theft.

The allegations against Kayondo were brought to light during a consultative meeting by the district leaders at Kasagama sub county headquarters over the weekend.

Kaserekirwe says that he was forced to drop the case because he could not afford to pay 170,000 shillings as Kayondo had asked.

Lyantonde district chairperson Fred Muhangi has however ordered for the arrest of the implicated police officer as investigations into the allegations continue.

He says that his office has registered several complaints against him and that he cannot continue to sit back and relax when locals are suffering at the expense of a corrupt police officer.

However, Lyantonde District Police Community Liaisons Officer Francis Asiimwe has asked residents to stay calm promising to follow up the claims against Kayondo.

Southern Region Police Commander Maxwell Ogwal when contacted for a comment advised Kaserekirwe to report the matter to the district police commander Timothy Keith Eyaku for action.
However, efforts to get a comment from Kayondo were fruitless.

Cases of police officers being in spotlight for soliciting bribes are becoming common in southern region the most remembered being that of John Bosco Rajah the in charge of Kako Police post in Masaka who was arrested for soliciting a bribe of 60,000 from a suspect accused of arson and malicious damage.

Rajah was arrested a few days after another cop, Richard Turyomunsi a police officer attached to Nyendo police station had also been arrested for soliciting a bribe of 100,000 shillings in exchange for a police exhibit.
