Hundreds of potential recruits to the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces were a disappointed lot on Thursday after they were turned away.

Just less than 50 people out of the more than 200 that turned up for the recruitment exercise at Sub County headquarters were recruited.

Many escorted by their relatives and friends turned away frustrated and many were heard murmuring that the exercise was marred with some irregularities.

Peter Sekatawa, an S.6 school dropout hoped to join the army to earn some money so he could continue with his education. He however says that he was dropped at the last minute under unclear reasons.

Col. James Kinalwa, the army recruitment officer, however explained that they were overwhelmed by the huge turn up. Kinalwa says the military acted with dignity and professionalism during the exercise. He says more than 50 people passed all stages, but they were forced to cut down the number of recruits from Lyantonde.

Meanwhile the army recruitment exercise continues in Masaka, Sembabule and Rakai and other districts respectively. Some of the districts will be under joint recruitment.
