The composition of the court ends a break in which a number of pending cases had been put on halt.

They include; charges against Gen David Sejusa's former aides, the trial of officers accused of plotting attacks against Mbuya and Kabamba barracks, and a series of cases committed in Somalia, where Uganda sent troops under the auspices of the African mission in Somalia.

The UPDF General Court-Martial (GCM), established under Section 197 of the UPDF Act is one of the four courts in the UPDF legal system.

Other Courts are the Court-martial Appeal Court (CMAC), Division Court-martial (DCM) and Unit Disciplinary Committee (UDC).
