Police in Luweero have arrested a 27-year-old man who killed his girlfriend on suspicion of infecting him with HIV/Aids.

The suspect Alex Lubega killed his girlfriend Proscovia Nassanga (28) on Wednesday night.

The Binyonyi zone resident had discovered a few days earlier that his girlfriend of five months Nassanga had been swallowing anti-retroviral drugs secretly. Anti-retroviral drugs help a person who is HIV + to live a longer, healthier life and fight off opportunistic infections.

In custody, Lubega revealed that he had been having unprotected sexual intercourse with Nassanga during the duration of their relationship.

Lubega attacked Nassanga on Wednesday night with a machete in their two room rental. So savage was his attack that he almost decapitated Nassanga. He also inflicted deep wounds on her chest, mutilating her breasts.

Lubega then went on the run.

Eugene Erwaru, the Officer in charge of Luweero police station, said that Lubega was apprehended at Kiwoko in Nakaseke where he had gone into hiding.

A hunt for Lubega started after neighbours discovered Nassanga's body on Thursday morning.

Lubega said that he became convinced Nassanga had infected him with the incurable virus because lately his health had deteriorated and he kept suffering fever attacks.

Erwaru said that Lubega would most likely face a murder charge after investigations into the matter are concluded.
