Masaka Diocese has promised to pay a 90-year-old woman shillings 20 million shillings as court ordered last year.

Speaking with URN, Mr. Frank Ssewagudde, lawyer to the victim Ms. Irene Nakitto, (90) a resident of Matanga Village, Butende Sub County, in Masaka district said that the two parties reached an understanding on Wednesday. The church promised to pay the fine in instalments.

Ssewagudde  revealed that Mr. John Baptist Kawanga, lawyer of Masaka diocese promised to pay by the end of this month, they will be able to give Ms. Nakitto a half of the money in cheque and her land title of 9.3 acres of land on plot no.270 as well.

It is alleged that Masaka diocese dispossessed Ms. Nakitto of her land unlawfully. She realised this in 1995 when church started planting eucalyptus trees on her land and deciding how to use them. She claimed the land had been left to her by her late father Speito Kasule who died in 1983.

However, on 3rd-April-2013, the Magistrate Esther Nambayo cautioned church against taking over the 9.3 acres of land. Court declared Ms. Nakitto the lawful owner of the land and ordered the diocese to compensate her with 20 million shillings for the damages caused to her since 1995.

Church had earlier complained about  the court ruling. It has since backtracked on its complaints.

Church is however represented by John Baptist Kawanga, lawyer, Rev.Fr. Simon Peter Kamulegeya together with Fr. Male.
