Masaka Hospital Starts Boundary Opening on Disputed Land

Masaka Regional referral hospital has started a boundary opening exercise to resolve a long-standing land dispute with squatters.

During a meeting attended by security, municipality, village and hospital authorities on Wednesday at Masaka hospital board room, both parties unanimously agreed to open boundaries on the land.

The exercise will establish the boundaries of the hospital land and that of residents who are alleged to have encroached on hospital land.

Dr Nathan Onyaki, the Hospital's Director says that the hospital has more than 49 acres but a big part of this land is currently encroached by squatters, which has affected the hospital's' plans for expansion.

He says that in 2007, there were 70 squatters but the number has risen to 250 people. 

Leaders led by the Masaka municipality mayor Godfrey Kayemba Afayo and the hospital authorities with the district surveyor started the boundary opening activity and were later joined by residents. 

While addressing the residents at Kasubi village, the Masaka Municipality Mayor Godfrey Kayemba  Afayo told residents that the hospital and municipality officials will register all squatters on the hospital land before demarcating the boundaries of the hospital land kicks off.

He says that after the registration leaders with residents will meet again to agree on how valuation of their property on the land is conducted so that they can push for compensation of the affected residents.

Kasijagirwa village chairperson Richard Walugembe says that his leadership has conducted meetings with residents to tell them the importance of the boundary opening exercise.

Sarah Nalukaaga kasubi, the village women affairs secretary recognized the hospital for conducting the boundary opening exercise.

Masaka hospital and the district authorities are earmarking for land to construct a multi-billion regional heart institute and one of the strategies agreed upon is to have the encroachers leave the hospital land to pave way for this development.
