Hundreds of parents in Masaka district have fallen victim to unscrupulous people who are reportedly offering cheap Hepatitis B vaccination to their school-going children.

A group of people purporting to be doctors from Kampala have been moving around different schools in Masaka, luring the administrators to enroll their staffs and pupils to a cheaper Hepatitis B testing and vaccination program.

Among the affected parents are those that take their children to Leo's Junior Primary School located in Nyendo-Ssenyange division Masaka municipality, who were asked to report with an extra 60,000 shillings to cater for immunization.

According to the ministry of Health immunization procedure, children below the age of 14 years are not eligible for Hepatitis B vaccine, holding on the fact they were covered under routine immunization schedule.

John Bosco Waliggo, the school head teacher has confirmed to URN that they had been conned by unscrupulous persons that intended to use them convince their parents into the scam.

Waligo explains that a man who only identified himself as Doctor Ezra from Laborik Uganda Laboratories located on Bombo road in Kampala approached the school with the offer but hardly had they negotiated the deal that he unscrupulously sent out the messages to parents asking for money.

"He came and explained his project to us and we agreed that we would meet again and discuss the modalities of how to handle it but unfortunately he went against our back and sent out the messages," said Waligo.

According to Waligo, after cheating the teachers, Ezra also connived with the school's external secretarial and internet service provider in Masaka to send out bulk messages to the parents, however adding that these messages were recalled.

When we contacted Ezra through his phone, he furiously denied having intentions of conning the schools and hastily switched off his phone.

Charles Ssenfuka, the Chairperson of Masaka Primary Schools Head Teachers Association- MAPSHEDA also confirms there are more unsuspecting schools and individual teachers that have fallen prey of this immunization fraud in the district.

He says that they have reported that matter to the higher authorities in the district for administrative intervention.
