An unidentified prisoner has died on the spot and fourteen other people rushed to Masaka Referral Hospital after a pick up truck on which they were traveling overturned.

According to Jonathan Balodza, the Lwengo district police commander, the seriously injured persons include two prison warders attached to Lwengo prison, the driver and 11 inmates.

The accident occurred around Kyetume along Masaka-Mbarara highway on Friday morning. The fifteen people were aboard a pick up truck registration number UAN 393S.

Fellow inmates could not ascertain the names of the deceased person as everyone cried for help.

The inmates were heading to Kyabasibo Parish for community service at the time of the accident. Eye witnesses say the accident was inevitable since the driver was over speeding. They add that the driver lost control when he tried to over-take a speeding bus.

Balodza says the survivors were admitted in critical condition and police is still looking for the right particulars in order to inform their relatives.

He also attributes the accident to reckless driving and appeals to road users to be careful to avoid similar incidents.

The wreckage was later towed to Lyantonde police station.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Kyazanga Hospital Mortuary as investigations continue.

The accident comes just hours after an over speeding double cabin pickup killed students of Mbarara Army Boarding Secondary School while riding a bicycle to school at around 7:30 am along Mbarara-Masaka highway.
