Several sheikhs in Masindi are planning to secede from the Bunyoro Muslim administrative unit. The sheiks are part of the Bunyoro District Muslim Council, which encompasses Kibaale, Hoima, Buliisa and Masindi. Last evening they held a meeting with Sheikh Muhamoud Katuramu, a member of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, in which they expressed dissatisfaction in their administration. The sheikhs complained that the current administrative set up is not conducive for them. They said it is large and needs to be split in order to establish order in the Muslim community. Several sheiks who attended the meeting, said the Bunyoro District Khadhi Swamadu Musa did not attend the meeting. They disclosed that in Musa's absence, it was resolved that his 37 years of service had been sufficient and it is time for him to be replaced. In a new proposed administrative structure, the interim District Khadhi of Masindi will be Sheikh Yahaya Safiano. The District Muslim Council will be headed by Muhamoud Kazimbiraine and Sulaiman Birungi will manage Muslim properties in the district. The interim administration is however subject to approval by Bunyoro district council that sits in Hoima. Sheikh Swamadu Musa could not be reached for a comment on his removal from office. It is not clear whether the changes proposed in Masindi are part of the ongoing rift in the national Muslim community between supporters of the Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Ramadhan Mubajje and his rival Sheikh Zubair Kayongo. Muhamoud Katuramu, who represented the Supreme Council at yesterday's meeting in Masindi, is in the anti-Mubajje camp. However he insists that the meeting was not prompted by the national leadership crisis. He says it was the result of various loopholes in the constitution of the Muslim Supreme Council.
