Police in Mayuge have intensified the search for the body of a police constable who drowned in Lake Victoria while on an unauthorized hunt for illegal fishermen.

Saulo Ngobi, a constable attached to Kaaza police post at Jaguzi Landing Site, drowned on Monday night after a strong wind made the boat to capsize.

Police is now looking for his Ngobi’s body together with his AK 47 rifle. Ronald Isabirye, a fisherman who was with the drowned police constable, has been arrested by police and is helping in the investigations.

Amron Kintu, a district councilor for Jaguzi says police constables should take the lead in the fight against illegal fishing in Mayuge to save the fish from getting extinct. He regrets the death of the constable and adds that the gun leaves the residents at risk of people who may recover it and use it for bad reasons.

Sowedi Igaga, the chairman Beach Management Unit at Kaaza landing site says the boat in which the constable and Isabirye were traveling, was not the standard required for Lake Victoria.

Martin Okooyo, Mayuge district police commander says a special team has been sent to dive into the water to find the body and the gun.
