The FDC coordinator said the party is ready to receive Mbabazi despite several corruption allegations tagged to his name and his participation in the making of laws that infringe on rights to assemble.

Aswa County legislator Reagan Okumu, has said former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is welcome to join the opposition party Forum for Democratic Change despite past mistakes he made while serving the National Resistance Movement government.

Addressing the Press at his office in Gulu on Wednesday, the FDC coordinator for mobilisation and campaign in Northern Uganda, absolved Mbabazi of corruption scandals he was allegedly involved in arguing that he might have committed the acts at the orders of the party chairman. Okumu said Mbabazi might have been under NRM party pressure to assent to some of those actions.

Okumu likened Mbabazi to the Biblical prodigal son, who has used up most of his finances and decided to "come back home," when he could no longer look after himself.

President Yoweri Museveni, also the NRM party chairman sacked Mbabazi from his Prime Minister position a month ago. He has subsequently been forced to go on leave from his NRM Secretary General office following allegations that he was secretly using party structures to advance his presidential ambitions and would eventually oust Museveni. Mbabazi vehemently denies the accusation.

He was last week boxed into forced leave by the party's second top highest organ, Central Executive committee. His leave ends December 31, 2014.

The FDC party is largely formed of politicians who fell out with the current regime. Its President, Maj. Gen Mugisha Muntu is one of Museveni's longest serving army commanders, while its former chairman Kizza Besigye, was Museveni personal physician, but also served in various ministerial position before he fell out with the system in 2000.
