Teachers of Namakwekwe primary school, a government aided school in Mbale staged a strike to protest against poor feeding. They accuse the school administration of feeding them only on posho and beans. The striking teachers have since Monday not reported for duty on grounds that they are not getting a balanced diet.

Namakwekwe a UPE school provides lunch to teachers using money levied on pupils for Parent Teachers Association-PTA. But the teachers claim that the head teacher Joan Namasole is responsible for the poor feeding because she allegedly misuses PTA money.

Geresem Gambuwa one of the striking teachers’ claims that they are always fed on beans and posho from beginning to the end of the term. He says under previous administration they would eat meat and rice. Richard Kagoye another teacher says they are forced to go and look for food from out of the school because they are always served with poor quality beans and posho.

Joan Namasole the head teacher says the teachers are trying to sabotage her leadership by staging the strike. She warns that she has nowhere to go because she will be rejected by other schools. Joseph Kimbowa, Mbale town clerk this afternoon met the striking teachers and the school administrators and advised them to include other foods in the menu.
