Mbarara Woman Held for Child Theft

Natukunda reportedly stole the two weeks old baby from Day star Cathedral in Mbarara town on Sunday October 17.

Police in Mbarara Municipality are holding a 25-year-old woman on allegations of aggravated human trafficking.  The suspect, Annet Natukunda, is a resident of Kirindi Cell, Rwekubo ward, Isingiro.

Natukunda reportedly stole the two weeks old baby from Day star Cathedral in Mbarara town on Sunday October 17.

The baby's mother Christine Tukamushaba, a resident of Katete ward in Nyamitanga Division had left the baby at the Church while she sought treatment from a nearby clinic. Upon her return, she found the baby missing. The baby was found at Natukunda's home two days later.

Taban Chiriga, the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department at Mbarara Police Station says police worked closely with the leadership of Day Star Cathedral to track the suspect.

Annet Natukunda, the suspect however says that the baby had been abandoned at the Church. She adds that claims that she could not wait for the baby's mother to return because someone had offered her a ride to Isingiro.

However in her police statement, she said that she wanted to please her husband for whom she had failed to give a baby.
