Kasese's Notorious Robber Handed 43 years Jail Sentence

Joseph Katobero Kule, a member of a notorious gang that orchestrated several robberies in Kasese district between 2011 and 2012, has been sentenced to 43 years in jail for murder.

Kule, 37, was sentenced this morning by Justice David Kibuka, the Mbarara resident judge who is conducting a criminal session in Kasese district.

Court heard that on July 5, 2012 while at Kabuyiri I cell in Nyabugando ward, Kule and others still at large killed Nicolas Muthengera, and robbed him of unspecified amount of money and a mobile phone.

Other members of the group, Swalleh Muhindo, Amza Salimboko and Julius Masereka are already serving a 40 year jail sentence over the same murder. They were convicted and sentenced by Justice David Batema the Fort Portal resident judge early last year.

Prosecution witness Monday Kyungu, told court that Kule participated with three others to kill Muthengera whom they had called on phone to meet them outside his house.

Justice Kibuka said that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Kule participated in the murder of Muthengera, who was his friend.

State prosecutor Gilbert Murungi had asked for a death sentence despite the convict being a first offender.

At least 12 people most of them businessmen and Amon Thembo Wamupaghasya, a veteran journalist were shot dead in various night robberies in the sub-counties of Karambi, Bwera and Mpondwe-Lubiriha town council between 2011 and 2012.

The group is said to have been behind the murders.
