State Minister for Animal Industry Bright Rwamirama has said farmers in Kiruhura district are politicizing the prevalence of the East Coast Fever in the area.

The minister of state for Animal Industry Bright Rwamirama has said farmers in Kiruhura district are politicizing the prevalence of the East Coast Fever in the area.

Rwamirama was appearing before the Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Committee of parliament to respond to the petition tabled by the Nyabushozi County Member of Parliament Fred Mwesigye on behalf of the cattle keepers.

The farmers were decrying the death of their cattle because of the East Coast Fever that had broken out in the area.

The minister however said the group exaggerated the numbers of the animals that have so far died of the disease.

While the petition talked of 5,608 cows that have died, Rwamirama told the committee that the actual number of cows that have died since the beginning of this year is 200.

Rwamirama told the committee chaired by Bugangaizi West MP Dr. Atwooki Kasirivu that the disease hasn’t been kicked out because the farmers are not using the recommended medicine.

He also said these live stock farmers buy cheap and fake drugs from unauthorized dealers which have worsened the situation.

Cue out: …since the beginning.”//

The committee says it will investigate the authenticity of the petition.

In September this year, farmers from Kiruhura asked government to vaccinate all the animals in the district against East Coast fever following the outbreak of the disease. They petitioned parliament arguing that the problem has been persistent for the last two years in the district but farmers have not yet received any help from government.
