Over 500 motorcycle (boda boda) cyclists have besieged the Mityana district headquarters at Kannamba in Mityana town council, protesting against the planned registration exercise of all motorcycles in the district.

The cyclists first held a procession through Mityana town, from where they were joined by Wotonava Fed the Councillor representing Mityana town council at the district.

At the district offices, the cyclists have met the district speaker Sserumaga Aloysius and expressed their dissatisfaction over the registration fee of 50,000 shillings.

Kabonge Musa, one of the cyclists, told the speaker that they had been informed by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Namijumbi Takia that they were to pay 50,000 shillings for registration, which money they said is too much.

Wotonava handed over a petition to the speaker, in which he asked the district leadership to immediately intervene and stop the exercise.

In the petition, Wotonava said the cyclists are paying different taxes, and asking them for more money for registration is not fair.

He further cited the poor conditions in which the boda boda cyclists work, mentioning the poor roads especially in Mityana town council, saying they are all failing their work.

He noted that the registration exercise is good but must be done free of charge and by either the district, or any appointed body but not the office of the RDC.

Sserumaga says after receiving the petition, is going to forward it to the district council which is due to sit next week and will discuss and make a final decision.

Last week, the deputy RDC Namijumbi Takia and Mityana district police bosses called for a meeting of the boda boda leaders and told them they were to register all the motorcycles in the district.

They said the exercise would be done by the office of the district you leaders led by the chairperson youth council Kigozi Dick in conjunction with the district security bosses.
