The promotion of Maj. Gen. Wilson Mbadi and Brig. Peter Elwelu has drawn mixed reactions in Kasese district.  On Monday night, President, Yoweri Museveni promoted Mbadi to Lieutenant-General and appointed him Deputy Chief of Defence Forces.

Museveni also promoted Brig Peter Elwelu, the former 2nd Division Commander to Major General and appointed him Commander Land Forces. Maj. Gen. Mbadi is a native of Mukunyu Sub County, Bukonzo East, Kasese district and former body guard of President Museveni.

Maj Gen. Elwelu led the UPDF offensive on Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu palace on November 27th, 2016. The operation led to the death of more than 100 people.  The promotion of the duo has generated mixed reactions among Kasese residents.

Saul Maate, the Kasese District Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party chairperson, says the promotion of Mbadi should not excite the people of Kasese because they have not benefited from his previous positions.

Maate claims that by promoting Mbadi to Deputy CDF, the President wants to appease the people of Kasese to forget about last month's killings in the district. Maate also adds that Elwelu's promotion is a reward for the atrocities he committed against the people of Kasese and humiliation of their king last month.

Moses Muhindo, a resident of Kasese town, says the promotions of both army officers aren't a surprise to him. He says Mbadi's promotion will only please his family members and a few people around him but not the entire population of Kasese.

However, Johnson Kamalha, a businessman in Kasese town says that the people in Kasese should be proud of Mbadi's promotion. He explains that it is the first time for a Mukonzo to be among the top brass in the army leadership.

Kamalha adds that Elwelu also helped calm down tensions and bring peace in the district. There have been calls for Elwelu to be investigated over the manner he commanded the raid on Buhikira palace and arrest of Mumbere and his royal guards.
