The Chairman of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), Dominic Otuchet has said athletes are highly motivated because of the monthly stipend put in place by the government.

After Stephen Kiprotich won gold in marathon at the London Olympics in August last year, the Athletics body requested President Museveni at Entebbe State House to start the monthly stipend to motivate other athletes to excel. State House put in place a system where athletes who win in big Africa African and World events are given Shillings one million monthly. In August this year, Kiprotich won gold at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Russia.

The UAF Chairman confirmed to Uganda Radio Network on Monday afternoon that 20 athletes are already getting the monthly stipend since mid-last year. Otuchet said he is thankful to President Museveni who accepted request to motivate athletes and give them monthly stipends.

Otuchet also disclosed that nine of the athletes who traveled for the 2012 Olympics are benefiting from the scheme. The money is reportedly wired direct to the accounts of the athletes.

The Chairman explained that they have six other athletes including two from the Paralympics team who will soon be considered for the scheme. He explained that this scheme which has the likes of Kiprotich and Moses Kipsiro benefiting will go on for the active athletes until they retire from the sport.

Otuchet said they are also hopeful that other sporting disciplines like football whose players perform at the world stage or African events will get a chance to benefit.

When asked about the scheme, however, National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary, Jasper Aligawesa said he was not aware about the details since the money comes direct from State House.
