Moroto Magistrate court on Thursday upon orders from the Bank of Uganda destroyed counterfeit notes worth1.6 million shillings in Moroto Municipality, Moroto district.
John Omwony, the officer in charge of crime desk in Moroto, says the notes were detected by the Bank of Uganda after it carried out a forensic examination. A letter dated 3rd of September originating from Bank of Uganda, indicate the notes were fake.

The counterfeit notes in shs 20,000 denomination were found on the person of Richard Opio a trader in Moroto and a resident of Ajaki village, Amuchu Sub-County in Amuria district. He was handed a jail sentence of two years in Moroto Central Government Prison on 2nd November, 2012.
His worship Sunday Duncan, Moroto Grade one Magistrate gave the orders after John Ochopa told court that case had been closed. He adds that the overwhelming evidence pinned the accused for dealing in fake currency. He explains that on the 30th, August while at Camp Swahili trading centre, the accused used fake notes to buy a bottled beer for himself.
Duncan added that the bar attendant suspecting the notes were counterfeit called the police at a nearby post and he was arrested. Upon interrogation, the accused told court that he had bought the fake notes from Ocorimongin market in Katakwi district. He confessed that he had bought the notes hoping that he would make eke a living out of the dubious business.

George Obia, Moroto District Police Commander, advises the general public to be on the lookout as the festive season draws near. He adds that the public should cooperate with the Police to weed out the criminals.
The fake notes were punched in the presence of non-government officials, district officials and police. This is the first time Moroto Magistrate Court destroys fake currency in its history.
